{Update #5} Our First Garden

I meant to post this update with pictures on Saturday, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Better late than never, though, I guess.

Our little garden is growing rapidly now and we’ll soon be picking our cabbage and canning some kraut, and when the tomatoes ripen I’m hoping to also can them. The beans are still getting snatched by bunnies, but they’re blooming now so hopefully we’ll harvest more of them than our pests will! Having the tomato plants beside the raised bed is my only regret with this year’s garden. They have gotten so big and bushy that I couldn’t very well reach half of my spinach and lettuce! Last week I wound up thinning out the lettuce I couldn’t get to and pulling up the spinach I can’t reach without crawling through a tomato bush (not easy!). A lot of the spinach had also gotten blown over and was going to kill my fennel, so something had to be done with it anyway. Our broccoli finally has put on, so I’m relieved. The squash has gotten huge, and we planted grape tomatoes and bell peppers (maybe I mentioned that in the last update but I can’t remember).

This amateur gardener is learning a LOT this year, but a sweet lady told me the other day that I take after my Mawmaw (who’s a master gardener if there ever was one!), so that was a huge compliment (and definitely a stretch because I am nowhere near being as good at gardening or as knowledgeable as she is!) but it was such a sweet thing to hear! Maybe I’ve got those gardener genes in me somewhere and someday they’ll show.

But that’s all I have for today, except, of course, some pictures!

Have a great day!

{Update #4} Our First Garden

Here’s a quick update and a few pictures of our garden. We’re still getting lettuce, spinach, and peppers. The tomato plants are so full of fruit so when they ripen we’re gonna have plenty!

Today we planted more tomato plants (this time some grape and cherry tomatoes), bell peppers, and we gave another shot at some more bush bean seeds. We’ll see how they do, and hopefully the rabbits won’t take them over like they did the peas. (Hubby has shot two rabbits so far, but we know there’s at least one more either living in our yard somewhere or close by.)

I also planted some peppermint in an old ice cream maker bucket and I’m super excited about that! Growing up, we had a flower bed full of peppermint and I would love to do that someday, but until we own a house I’ll keep it contained in a pot. It’s a small plant at the moment but I know they grow really fast, so once it spreads some I’ll put it on the front porch beside the door for a nice, welcoming decoration.

That’s about all there is to update you on right now, so here are some snapshots I took yesterday evening.

Have a great day!
